The disease affects the species Psalm salar (Salmon of the Atlantic Ocean) in fish farms and it is have been reported in Canada, Norway, Scotland, Islands Faroë, The United States and Chile, causing severe losses to the infected farms. The disease does not have impact in public health, since the virus does not affect the man.
The disease was reported by the first time in Norway in the 80s.
The disease is listed as a non-exotic disease of the EU and is therefore watched closely by the European Community Reference Laboratory for Fish Diseases.
The aetiological agent of ISA is the infectious salmon anemia virus (ISAV). ISAV, a RNA virus, is the only species in the genus "Isavirus" which is in the family Orthomyxoviridae.
